Fun Loving Couples members Bill and Kaelan S. traded in the flatlands of SoCal and moved to the scenic mountain resort of Lake Arrowhead, CA. Bill and Kaelan invited Fun Loving Couples up to enjoy a little live music at the annual Lake Arrowhead Concert Series to check out Crowded Streets, a Dave Matthews Cover Band.
We made the hour and a half road trip up the mountain with little fanfare except for a little motion sickness due to the beautiful pine tree lined winding roads leading to the top. Upon arrival we were greeted by Bill and Kaelan and a couple of chilled glasses of wine before touring their unique 3 level 2,900 sq ft home. The top level has forever views (literally) set amongst a mature pine tree forest. The fresh air with subtle scent of pine was very refreshing.
Sitting quietly on the deck surrounded by pine, cedar, and dogwood trees at an altitude of 5100′ you become aware of the sounds of the soft and fresh mountain breezes, Squirrels jumping from tree to tree effortlessly like trapeze artists, Chipmunks playing tag like school children, all under the watchful eyes of Woodpeckers, Mountain Chickadees and large, noisy blue birds with black Mohawk haircuts known as the Steller’s Jay. – AWESOME!
Keep in mind you are in the mountains of Southern California and Lake Arrowhead’s native mountain critters also include coyotes, bob cats, raccoons, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, skunks, cougars and the occasional black bear which Bill and Kaelan caught on their security cameras!
So as not to give away any secrets and to maintain their privacy we won’t go into details of the rest of their amazing home but needles to say it is impressive with a few unexpected surprises. The lower level (also known now as the FLC Suite) has it’s own huge deck, full kitchen, living room, bed room and bathroom. You’d be hard pressed to find better more inviting accommodations at 4 or 5 star resorts.
With the house tour concluded it was time to call the Lake Arrowhead Uber equivalent to take us to the concert. A small red sedan pulls up out front and as I approach I see the the backseat is covered in hay and mud and looks as if the passengers before us may have been a heard of goats. Mark, our driver was a colorful fellow with a varied history of chasing construction jobs over the decades and ultimately landing permanently in Lake Arrowhead. Mark has hardened chiseled features, smells of cigarettes and tells us stories of his children and the multiple strokes he’s had over the years.
As we were driving and getting to know Mark a little better an irritating beeping sound suddenly comes out of nowhere. Mark reaches down and pulls out his ignition interlock car breathalyzer!
What the heck!
How does a person with a checkered DUI past get to be an on-demand private driver?
Suddenly the evening takes on a comedic feel.
By the grace of God we arrive safely at the Lake Arrowhead Village and are dropped off right at the door step of the concert. Talk about door to door service, thanks Mark.
Although music filled the air it was time to grab a few street tacos and a couple of Clydes Pink Cocktails (basically a dolled up margarita) at El Papagayos Mexican Restaurant & Cantina on the patio (voted one of the 10 best.) For a quick bite we had quick service and great tasting food. All in all, not bad. We will check them out again!
Lake Arrowhead has a year round population of less than 13,000 and draws 3 million visitors annually. Considered as the “downtown” of Lake Arrowhead, the Village showcases many specialty and outlet stores along with a variety of restaurants. The FREE Summer Concert Series runs every Friday and Saturday night for 18 weeks from the middle of May through Labor Day and showcases some of the best bands in California and the west. The variety of musical styles features something for everyone from Classic Rock/Pop to Reggae and Country to even Celtic rock. All concerts are perfect for families and run from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.
We hate to admit it but due to its perceived small size we were somewhat reserved about the concert experience but it turns out that was an unfair and unfounded assessment because these folks put on a great concert rivaling bigger cities with bigger budgets. The lake wraps around the venue on three sides making it a somewhat idyllic setting and you can come and go as you please. Bring plenty of cash because the venue sells beer and wine and doesn’t accept credit cards.
And just to set the record straight the bands aren’t your garden variety small town unkowns (although we’ve fun at these gigs too), check out this ridiculous list of past and upcoming shows:
The Dave Matthews Experience (aka Crowded Streets) delivered a stellar performance with great stage presence and lots of energy. With eyes closed you might actually think the real Dave Matthews band found their way up to the lake.
The show wound down after a single encore performance and then it was time for another bite to eat! A peripheral benefit of being part of FLC is the value of local guides. Bill and Kaelan were great hosts sharing insider tips and the 411 on where the locals eats, in other word where to go and where NOT to go. In this instance they introduced us to The Lakefront Tap Room where we shared a few appetizers and something called “NOT YOUR FATHER’S ROOT BEER“. The place was packed and the hostess told the wait was an hour but we were seated in about ten minutes. We were promptly greeted by Audry (our server) who will probably grow into being a golden key here.
Finished with food and ready for a little rest and relaxation (sleep) we summon another ride back to Bill and Kaelan’s home and who shows up? MARK!!!! Let’s just leave it right here that by the time we arrived our stomachs and faces hurt due to the endless laughter we had during the ride.
After a brief 30-minutes of star gazing and listening to the tranquility it is time to for “toes up” (sleep). And unlike most hotel rooms we were treated to a clean and comfortable bed that almost reminded us of home. Nothing beats your own bed that molds and contours to your body.
After a relaxing night of sleep it is time for Breakfast. Bill and Kaelan hit another home run by introducing us to the Cedar Glen Inn (no website – sorry) for brunch. It was a very good breakfast with lots of options including custom omelettes. Everything was well prepared well, fruit is fresh cut, real butter, full body flavorful coffee, with friendly and attentive service. A nice step up from a diner. You won’t go wrong here for breakfast!
We take Bill and Kaelan back to their lovely home and head back down the hill. This time driving slower so as not to invite the motion sickness nasties.
Great time had with good friends enjoying good food and good music! It doesn’t get much more FLC (better) than that. After all the #FLCLifestyle is all about #Travel, #EatWell, #Workout and #HaveFun.
It is our belief you must deliberately and intentionally focus on bringing adventure into your relationship because adventure trumps complacency and complacency leads to undesirable things. So, what on your calendar for this weekend?
