Have you ever dreamt of quitting your 9-5 job and live internationally with your significant other someday? Many couples are ready to take their work overseas while others are ready to retire. States like Palm Springs, California or Florida are popular for retirement, but some couples take the next step by moving to a new country and living there full time.
Panama has always been a traveler’s favorite. It’s a beautiful country with great weather, captivating landscapes, numerous national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Panama is known for the infamous Panama Canal. The man-made waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Like every other capital city, there’s poverty and crime, but safe for tourists and expats.
Besides the nice weather and great views, expats chose Panama as a retirement and business destination because it’s very international friendly. Many Panamanian citizens and international residents speak English so it’s easy to meet people and make new friends. There are plenty of social activities like salsa dancing classes, fishing, and golfing so couples never be bored. There are international summits held at conventions Panama City. They even created the Panama International Film Festival.
People can move here without a hassle. Since the international population is growing, new residence programs have been developed for newcomers so they can feel right at home once they get. IT’S CHEAP! when it comes to healthcare, entertainment and transportation the cost is under 2,500 a month. Panama has some of the best and cheapest form of transportation in the world here. Travelers can also visit Boquete another great international community if you want leave Panama for a day. It’s a six hour drive and one hour flight.
Earlier this year in February, Linda and Charles attended an International living conference in Panama City, Panama to learn more about living there full time or part time.
They stayed at the Hilton Panama. The hotel is located near the financial district in Panama City and close to Tocumen International Airport where they landed. There were a few rooms to choose from which were very modern and had technology that even some hotels in the US didn’t even have yet. The hotel package also came with free wifi and breakfast.
The staff mostly spoke Spanish, but they were still able to befriend some of the staff members like Martín the bartender and his helper Yanessy–they even follow each other on Instagram now! The hotel has a rooftop pool and restaurant that’s located in the hotel; it also has a Eforea Spa which is one of the first ones in Central America. The spa is coed because it’s specifically designed for couples and it. It has a whirlpool, a sauna and a steam room.
There are things to do and places to check out in Panama City. First of all, the currency is US dollars so american citizens don’t have to worry about exchanging money once they come to Panama.
The first place to check out is Casco Viejo; it’s the historical district in Panama City. It was Linda and Charles favorite place to visit; they even went there three times. The district was rebuilt after the original one was burnt down Sir Henry Morgan’s looted and attacked the city. The district also contains most of the main historical sites like the famous San Jose church Pope Francis visited and the La Catedral Metropolitana, the main Catholic Church in Panama City. They met a local named Conrad who give them a tour of the cathedral and around the district.
Some Casco Viejo photo opts: Plaza Herrera; Plaza de Francia; Plaza de la Indepencia. In Casco Viejo there are many restaurants to enjoy with world-class food. Linda and Charles went to a few and their favorites were Nazca 21 which had authentic Peruvian food and great service in this small off of the beaten path intimate restaurant. The other was (on the same night, haha) The Strangers Club, which actually started in New York City. Click their link to read their interesting story!
Couples can visit the Panama Canal which is 45 minute drive from Panama City. The canal is what put the whole country on the map. The website has a selection of tours and vacation packages to choose from.
For Animals lovers, you can take a monkey island tour. Lake Gatun is home to four different monkey species. The tour prices range between $200 and $60. Guests can pet the animals and take pictures of them because they’re friendly. They can also interact with the people of the Embera tribe that lives in the rainforest on the island. The day tours are about 6-8 hours with lunch included, so don’t plan to do any other activities that day.
No trip would be complete without dining options. There’s a plaza nearby the Hilton Panama hotel called the Balboa Boutiques. It’s a strip mall in Panama City where people go shopping and eat. Here’s some of the restaurants that Linda and Charles went to.
The Segundo Muelle is a rooftop Peruvian restaurant made with some of the best ingredients from Peru. Because it’s a rooftop restaurant, couples can enjoy the sunset views as romantic end to their busy day. Some of the menu items include Chinese and Creole options too.
Inedito Lounge is like an all day happy hour special. It’s another place to enjoy the views and also enjoy great cocktails served with appetizers.
For meat lovers there’s Lenos and Carbon. The restaurant is a typical steakhouse in Central America. The entrees are huge and they have options like BBQ meats, pork ribs, seafood, and other international cuisines.
Even though Linda and Charles enjoyed their time in Panama City, they decided that living in Panama wasn’t for them. If you would love to live overseas for work or retirement, check out https://internationalliving.com/ for information and attend a conference.
Here’s testimonial video from a woman who moved Panama four years ago. She talks about her living situation and how her business grew there over the years.
