Our blog writer Alonna and her friend Daisy decided to buck the system, ignore the news and travel to the Dominican Republic…but what did they think? Enjoy reading Alonna’s adventure, written by Alonna herself!
“So when’s your next trip?”
“Do you have any plans to travel soon?”
“Where do you want to go this time?”
These questions have been brought up in almost every conversation I had in the past two years.
So I decided it was time to plan a trip somewhere for the summer. This time it would be about a week long instead of my usual month long trips. My good friend Daisy and I finally booked our destination for June 2019. Our loved ones went from curious and excited, to worried and terrified.
We booked a trip to the current twitter trending country, the Dominican Republic!
This time it was not trending as vacation getaway, but more like a vacation “stayaway.” When people read about the DR, they usually see words like “cocktails,” “popular destination,” and “white sandy beaches.” Lately in the media people see the words “death,” “danger,” and “canceled trips.” Our friend Ryan, who is a flight attendant, told us that a few airlines will not be flying to the Dominican Republic right now. We received a few emails and texts from family members about the tragic incidents.
I even got a little nervous myself, but Daisy’s heart was set on going to the Dominican Republic. She had gone before and she fell in love with the country. Even my own mother, who I thought would worry the most, encouraged me to go and have a great time. I also purchased a first class ticket and I knew I would not be refunded all of my money if I canceled.
I will still nervous on the plane ride there, but when I got to Punta Cana, this was me the whole trip……..
It was worth it!
We stayed in Punta Cana, a beach town near the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic. It was also one of the main tourist destinations because the town is filled with numerous all-inclusive resorts. The weather is always hot and humid, but since the town is by the beach, the hot weather and the humidity balanced out well. Although the town does have beautiful resorts, the city is still under development. They have a new downtown shopping center and restaurants for tourists to explore.
We made accommodations at the Now Onyx, a luxury resort located next to the Uvero Alto beach in Punta Cana. The resort has a world-class spa, five swimming pools, a fitness center. For Dining, there are 10 restaurants at Now Onyx. Guests can choose from dishes like French, Italian or Asian. They also have two buffets for the indecisive foodies and the picky eaters.
As soon as we got there, we upgraded to the Now Onyx Preferred Club. With preferred club privileges, we had unlimited room service with an upgraded menu, two private pools for preferred members only and an inclusive room with views of the Uvero Alto beach. The preferred club also comes with a host that can help make the guests’ experience at the resort an amazing one. Our host was named Zorro. He made reservations for us at restaurants and book activities we wanted to do that day. Even on one of his days off, he booked a private cabana for us on the beach and he made sure we were taken care of by the other staff members.
The Now Onyx offers activities from horseback riding to dolphin excursions. They have the Explorers Club for kids and Core Zones for teens. For the adults, there’s Breathless, an adult-only resort right next door. They have a casino and nightclub club for entertainment. It’s only walking distance from Now Onyx, but staff members can take guests over on a golf cart if they didn’t want to walk in the heat.
The resort would not be completed without live entertainment. Every night, the Onyx staff puts on a show for the guests. The shows were exciting and the theme was always different. One night they showcased dances from all around the world. Another night, they celebrated the Dominican culture by dancing to Romeo Santos. We even got to meet some of the dancers after the show and dance with them.
One of the entertainment staff members took us to a beautiful cathedral in Higuey Punta Cana, a town outside the resort. The Señor de la Altagracia Cathedral, it is one of the youngest churches in Punta Cana because it was only built in 1971. Tourists come to visit this place because of the incredible architect. The church has a huge arch that stands about 220 feet high with bronze and gold entrances around the church.
Our vacation was ending soon and it was time to go. We ended becoming friends with the entertainment staff and we followed each other on Instagram.
Despite all the incidents in the news, the Dominican Republic is a destination that couples can check out. It has everything you need to enjoy a vacation. The beaches are breathtaking, the food is amazing and the people are wonderful. If my friend and I cancelled our trip, we would have definitely missed out on a lot; we actually plan on coming back soon. Thanks to my mom for encouraging me to go. Remember to listen to your mother because they’re always right!
